Dynamo’s season ends with loss to Silverbacks

GREENSBORO — The Carolina Dynamo closed out its season with a 4-2 loss to the Atlanta Silverbacks on Saturday night in front of 1,941 fans at Macpherson Stadium.

Coming off a 4-0 victory over Nashville on Friday night, the Dynamo came out flat. Just 30 seconds into the game, the Silverbacks had a golden scoring opportunity and they went on top just 12 minutes into the match.

Carolina had numerous scoring chances in the opening half but was unable to score even once. Meanwhile, Atlanta did not have nearly as many chances but seemingly converted on each of them to take a 3-0 lead into intermission.

“The first half was disappointing, but it was really the tale of how our season went,” Carolina coach Joe Brown said. “We’ve not been able to put teams away when we should have, and defensively we’ve not been a very good football team this year.

“We just didn’t come out with a great attitude and it hurt us. They got easy goals off us and put us behind the eight-ball a little bit, and we chased the game the whole second half. Even though we outplayed them in the second half, Atlanta did what they had to do to win the match.”

Nearly all of the action in the second half happened in front of the Silverbacks’ goal. But it looked like Atlanta was going to post its second shutout victory of the season over the Dynamo as the hosts simply could not buy a goal, no matter how good the scoring opportunity.

“Watching tonight’s game — how we missed the goals — was incredible,” Brown said. “That’s really what we’ve been dealing with all year long.”

Finally Cody Arnoux got Carolina on the board at the 82-minute mark. Two minutes later, Ryan Adeleye added a highlight-reel goal and suddenly it looked like the Dynamo could salvage its unbeaten season at home.

But five minutes later Ryan Roushandel scored his third goal of the game to clinch the victory for the visitors.

“Good teams create their own breaks, and we just haven’t been able to do that and get out of our own way,” Brown said. “A disappointing season from the standards this team has, but we’ll recover.”

The Dynamo finished the year at .500 and in the bottom half of the Southeast Division. One of the main reasons for the disappointing season was a 1-3 record versus the Silverbacks. But five of the Dynamo’s seven wins this season came at home.

“Good season for our home fans,” said Brown, who had established a goal of going unbeaten at Macpherson Stadium. “We weren’t a good team on the road. We just didn’t get a rhythm with the injuries we had. At the end of the day there’s no excuses. We just have to get back to basics and get our recruiting better and with coaching, and that comes back to me, do a better job.”

CARY — The Carolina Dynamo failed to hold a one-goal lead in the waning minutes of Tuesday night’s game and fell to the Cary Railhawks 3-2 in PDL soccer.
The Dynamo got goals from Eddie Ababio and Jamie Franks, and an assist from Sam Cronin. The Railhawks’ goals were scored by Billy Schuler (unassisted), Michael Callahan (penalty kick), and Brian Shriver (assist by Alan Sanchez).
The Dynamo’s next match is Friday at Atlanta.

GREENSBORO — Goalie Aaron Johnson came up with an outstanding sequence on a penalty kick and Michael Lahoud scored two goals to lead the Carolina Dynamo to a 2-1 win over the Atlanta Silverbacks in a Premier Development League game Friday night at Macpherson Stadium.

With the score tied 1-1 in the second half, a disputed call in front of the net gave the Silverbacks a penalty kick and a golden chance to take the lead at the 53-minute mark. But Johnson stopped the initial shot, turned back the rebound attempt and a third Atlanta shot went wide of the goal.

“I think Aaron did a great job,” Carolina coach Joe Brown said. “I was a little disappointed with the soft goal at the beginning of the second half. But there’s times that change seasons. And that penalty stop could be a season-changer for us. If we don’t walk out of here with three points tonight it’s a difficult run with Central Florida tomorrow. It was a tremendous time for him to make the saves that he made.”

Johnson came up with two more big saves before Lahoud scored the game winner on a header at the 85-minute mark.

“Mike just kind of nipped it over the goalkeeper and found the spot,” Brown said. “He found a way to get the ball in the back of the net. It was a good service, we had the numbers in the box to get it done and Mike’s second effort got it done. He had both goals tonight and he was certainly our player of the match. Not just because he scored goals but what he did on both sides of the ball tonight.”

As is its custom in home games, the Dynamo was on the attack early. This time it was finally able to get on the scoreboard early, as Lahoud scored at the 15-minute mark. Even at that early stage, it was the fourth good scoring opportunity for Carolina.

“We got the goal that we needed but the next step is we need to put teams away,” Brown said. “We had so many opportunities to put them away early. When you keep teams in games for so long, this is what happens. They sneak a goal in on us and they get a penalty on us and the next thing you know it’s 2-1. We’re fortunate tonight.”

Tonight the Dynamo takes on division-leading Central Florida and can move within two points of first place with a win.

Bidding to defeat Cary for the second consecutive game, the Carolina Dynamo surrendered three unanswered goals in the second half and fell 4-2 Saturday at WakeMed Soccer Park.

“We kind of just collapsed,” assistant coach Matt Brown said. “There was no character mentally. Nobody stepped up and took the team over. It was kind of like they just let it happen.”

Cody Arnoux and Kirk Urso scored for Carolina, which fell to 6-3-1. The Dynamo host Central Florida on Friday and Atlanta on Saturday at Macpherson Stadium. Both games start at 7:30 p.m.

FAIRMONT, W.Va. (June 7, 2008)–ILLUSION DERAILED BY CAROLINA. Three goals in the first half-hour
carried the Carolina Dynamo (2-3-1) to an easy 3-0 victory over the West
Virginia Illusion (0-5-0).

Katie Andreski paced the Dynamo with one goal and an assist on three
shots, while Megan Mischler and Sydney Metheny each had a shot for the
Illusion.

Andreski wasted no time putting the Dynamo ahead, breaking down the left
side and banking a shot in off of the far post in the seventh minute.

The Illusion nearly got back on level pegging in the 17^th minute;
Michelle Molinari’s corner kick from the right side was headed sharply
by Megan Mischler, but was cleared off the line by a Dynamo defender.

Andreski turned provider in the 21^st minute, beating a defender on the
right side and playing a low cross in to Tessa Hall at the far post for
an easy tap-in.

Hall picked up her second goal in the 29^th minute, finishing off a
cross from Hailey Beam.

Illusion forward Sydney Metheny was unlucky for the second game in a
row, hitting the crossbar in the 62^nd minute. Metheny was denied the
tying goal last week against the Carolina RailHawks by the woodwork.

Mischler was denied on a 16-yard shot by a full-extension save from
Dynamo goalkeeper Lauren Brown in the 68^th minute.

Illusion defender Kelsey Fowler drew a straight red card for a tackle in
the 75^th minute; Brown was also given a yellow card.

The Illusion begin a month-long road trip next Thursday when they visit
the Bradenton Athletics. The team’s next home game is July 11 against
the Richmond Kickers Destiny at 7:30 p.m.

ATLANTA, GA — The Atlanta Silverbacks Under-23s picked up its fourth straight win, topping the Carolina Dynamo 1-0 at Atlanta Silverbacks Park. Jordan Davis tallied for the Silverbacks in the second minute. Silverbacks goalkeeper Patrick Mitrovich preserved the side’s fourth consecutive clean sheet saving a second half penalty kick.

“I’m pleased with the win, but I don’t like the fact that we were one kick away from not winning,” said head coach Steve Muccillo. “Mitrocivh came up with a gigantic save that kept them off the score board, and that was enough. We’ll take it.”

The Silverbacks wasted not time putting a tally on the score sheet when Davis finished a lovely ball at the far post from Kenny Dix in the second minute of play.

After the early goal, both teams fought for control of the match–which neither team could claim. Mitrovich, making his first start in three games, and his counterpart Aaron Johnson were both busy, though not terribly taxed in the first half.

Carolina’s best chance in the first half came in the 31st minute when Mitrovich misplayed a ball with his feet but redeemed himself, saving the ball bravely at the feet of Miguel De Silva.

The Silverbacks were unlucky not to double its lead in the 54th minute when Pascal Millien just missed wide on the far post off a perfectly weighted ball from Chad Burt.

Millien’s speed on the right flank found him in behind the Carolina back line. The acute angle at which he had on goal forced him to hold the ball up and wait for help. Milien found a trailing Kenny Dix, but his shot was blocked.

Mitrovich put his mark on the match in the 64th minute, saving a Jokull Elisabertson penalty kick. The spot kick resulted after the Silverbacks’ Joe Devito went into a tackle on the edge of the penalty area with a little too much enthusiasm. Elisabertson pushed the kick to his left as Mitrovich went the same way, batting the ball away for a corner kick.

In the 81st minute Millien had another opportunity on a solo run from midfield, but could not get past the charging Johnson.

The win moves the Silverbacks to 4-1-1 on the season, and keeps the side in playoff contention.

Virginia Beach, Virginia – Mercy Akide Udoh doesn’t need any reason to reassert herself as the Hampton Roads Piranhas’ most decorated players.

The former Nigerian National Team member and FIFA World All-Star opted to do so anyway, logging her second and third goals of the season in the first half. She provided the Piranhas with an insurmountable advantage: a 4-1 victory over the Carolina Dynamo in Saturday night’s USL W-League match at Virginia Wesleyan College.

Hampton Roads (1-3-0) earned its first win of 2008, and looked determined to set the pace even from the opening whistle when Akide Udoh made a run up the left side of the field before halted by Dynamo defenders.

Three minutes later, midfielder Kelly Lawrence nearly found the scoresheet when her free kick from 23 yards banged off the crossbar with Chichi Nweke’s follow up missing high and wide.

Hampton Roads, determined to take the early lead, would do so in the ninth minute with Akide Udoh’s dribbling goal off a Dynamo deflection in the box after a broken corner played in by Kim Francis.

Joy Nsubuga nearly made the Piranhas edge two goals in the 17th minute with a nifty touch between her legs to break free from the marking defender before curling a ball too far to the right. Florence Omagbemi Onuja also misfired on the fish’s second corner of the match a minute later, heading the ball wide.

Carolina’s first legitimate scoring drive came in the 29th minute. Midfielder Hailey Beam broke free up the right side and made a direct line toward the near post but her crossing attempt toward the left side was deflected out of play by Piranha defenders.

Akide Udoh would strike again for the red-and-white eight minutes later, timing her run to parallel the defense as player-coach Wendy Kotwas Waddell played a ball to the right touchline. After juking Cam Dillon to her right, Akide Udoh slid the ball into the left side of the net to double the Piranhas margin heading to the break.

After being out-shot 9-1 in the opening stanza, Carolina (0-4-1) appeared determined to cut into their deficit in the second half.

Reserve forward Carey Goodman almost got it started for the Dynamo in the 47th minute when she received a ball served in from the right side of the midfield, turned, and had her eight-yard blast diverted wide by Piranhas goalkeeper Lauren Hollandsworth.

The Dynamo nearly reached the board with a couple possessions in the 54th and 55th minutes. Forward Taylor Rovito footed a left side corner just short of the near post, then Goodman, while accepting a long ball from midfield, was flagged in an offside position.

Goodman continued to hammer the Piranha defense again in the 57th, heading a left side cross from Ashley Church wide right while pressured by Omagbemi Onuja inside the penalty spot.

Nweke countered a minute later seemingly by accident. On a right side service, the ball fell at her feet off a Dynamo deflection and back toward the net. Goalkeeper Lauren Brown was there to collect the attempted shot.

The Piranhas continued coming back on the offensive in the 62nd minute when Lawrence drove a right footed free kick toward the left side of the net. It forced Brown to dive to her right and collect the well-struck ball.

Goodman and Carolina were determined, though, to make things interesting and did so in the 64th minute. Allie Sadow’s shot through traffic was bumped back into play by Hollandsworth, putting Goodman in position to clean up the rebound for her first goal of the season.

The Piranhas answered with authority with two goals in a six minute span. The first came in the 69th minute by Nsubuga off some efficient passing in the right side of the attacking third, the last pass off the foot of Lawrence. Then in the 75th, Kotwas Waddell’s corner kick found the head of Cobb in the center of the box who directed home the goal, the first for both Piranhas this season.

Goodman nearly connected again for Carolina in the 83rd minute on a standing bicycle kick from the middle of the box off a left side cross. The ball went over traffic and looked to dip in before reserve keeper Victoria Johnson ascended to collect the shot.

Johnson was also forced to bump a pair of Dynamo corner kicks wide over the final stages of Saturday’s match, avoiding any further goal allowances.

Hampton Roads held a 15-10 shot advantage with Hollandsworth earning four saves and Johnson with one in the victory. Brown recorded three saves for Carolina.

Next up for the W-League Piranhas is a doubleheader with the PDL side as they travel up to face the Richmond Kickers Destiny and Future in matches two and three of the 2008 James River Cup. The PDL match between the two clubs begins at 4pm and the W-League match follows at 7pm, both at Sports Backers Stadium.

GREENSBORO, NC — Panama City picked up their second draw of their inaugural campaign, battling to a 2-2 draw in Greensboro, and taking a crucial road point from their longest road trip of the season.

After a tough loss to the Cary RailHawks U-23’s on Thursday, the Panama City Pirates set their sights on perennial contenders Carolina Dynamo. The Dynamo, who have been strong throughout the young season, came into the game sitting in second place in the PDL Southeast. The Pirates came in to the match just one point out of last place, a gap they hoped to widen.

In an interesting turn of events, what should have been a one-sided contest proved to be a very dicey affair, as the game saw four different Pirates written into the referee’s book, and also saw the ejection of Pirates playmaker Anteneh Lemma in the 90th minute of play.

The Dynamo sent wave after wave of offense at the Pirates, but only managed to notch two goals out of 16 shots. They were turned back in part by the impressive play of Pirates goalkeeper Ryan Germann, who stopped seven of nine shots on goal. The Pirates spent most of the match on defense but were far more lethal in their finishing, putting each of their five shots on frame.

The result signals that the Pirates offense is starting to wake up, and that the team as a whole is performing better. The Pirates’ two goals, scored by Matt Watts and Anteneh Lemma, respectively, mark the third and fourth Pirates to notch goals on the year. However, due to the red card issued to Lemma in the final moments of the game, the Pirates will have to play next Sunday’s match against the Nashville Metros without their center midfielder, who has proved instrumental since his arrival prior to the Pirates’ draw against Bradenton.

With their road trip complete, the Pirates head home to face Nashville next Sunday. They can enter the match with a bit more confidence, knowing they gained a bit of ground, however small, on the rest of the pack as well as widened the gap between themselves and Palm Beach.

CARY, NC — The Caroina RailHawks Women tied the Carolina Dynamo 1-1 on Saturday afternoon in the first match of the Inaugural Memorial Day RailHawks Doubleheader.

UNC defender Betsy Frederick put the RailHawks on top with a beautiful direct kick in the top right corner from 35 yards out in the 35th minute.

The Dynamo tied it up in the second half with a goal by Taylor Rovito.

Why the Dynamo win: Carolina controlled the tempo and got the ball behind the defense.

Performances worth noting: Miguel DaSilva scored three goals. Dynamo captain Zach Loyd helped control the game, and Aaron Johnson made some big saves.

Also worth noting: The Pumas were disorganized. They had no ballboys, and some jersey numbers didn’t match the roster.

The big play: DaSilva’s third goal, which made it 3-1 before halftime. Eddie Ababio was one-on-one with Pumas goalie Phillip Fisher when Fisher fell down, and Ababio passed to it back to DaSilva in front of a wide-open net.

DYNAMO OVERCOME SLOW START

GREENSBORO — The Carolina Dynamo had a harder go of it in its second game of the season, but the end result was the same as the Dynamo came away with a 2-1 win over the Cary RailHawks in a Premier Development League game Wednesday night at Macpherson Stadium.

Cary jumped out to an early lead as keeper Aaron Johnson’s first goal allowed as a member of the Dynamo came on a header by Brian Shriver at the 4-minute mark of the contest.

“We came out a bit sluggish,” Carolina coach Joe Brown said. “We were a little bit tired from Saturday and two days of training. But we did the things we needed to do to win and get the equalizer even when we were playing bad.”

About 15 minutes into the contest, the Dynamo (2-0-0) started to exert its will on the RailHawks (0-2-1). The home team tied the game at the 30-minute mark on a goal by Sheanon Williams.

“Sheanon just got back,” Brown said. “He played against Manchester United Reserves in England with our U-20 national team. He was sharp, and we knew that would help us. Obviously scoring that first goal took a little bit of that piano off our backs as far as keeping things going.”

The game went into halftime tied, but it was clear that Carolina had the momentum. While Cary was able to attack early in the game, the Dynamo defense stepped up, with David Rodriguez and Eddie Ababio refusing to allow any scoring chances in the second half.

“Our four backs were solid, not just under pressure but making sure that we could advance and try to get the game back and then to hold the lead,” Brown said.

Carolina took the lead for good when Ababio slipped the ball to Michael DaSilva, who scored his second goal of the season.

“We wore them down towards the end,” Brown said. “. The coaching staff was telling everyone to get it to Miguel and the opportunity came and he finished it off.”

Brown was disappointed in the slow start but happy with how it responded to its first adversity of the season.

“We learned how to kill a game off, which is nice for us,” he said. “To come back from being behind, get even, get a lead and then shut the game down. We went through two or three chapters tonight which will help us down the road.”
